A Practical Methods for Ethylene Removal and Sulfur Dioxide Treatment in MA Package

Abstract
Ethylene during fruit storage is injurious to long-term storage due to aging and abscission and therefore ethylene removal is important to fruit storage. Ethylene removal was achieved by perlite soaked in 1M KMnO©þ and contained in a nonwoven fabric bag. Two grams of this perlite reduced 100 ppm ethylene concentration to 0 in a 4 L box. Sodium bisulfite was most effective among 4 kinds of sulfur dioxide releasing chemicals, sodium bisulfate, sodium metabisulfite, sodium sulfate anhydrous, sodium peroxodisulfate. The vinyl coated paper bag containing sodium bisulfate was the most effective in producing high SO©ü for longer periods. The combined treatment of sodium bisulfate and KMnO©þ produced lower sulfur dioxide than the sodium bisulfate treatment alone.
